IMPORTANT UPDATE: Due to revisions in the curriculum of the Career and Technology Studies (CTS) program, the existing Design Studies courses (print versions) offered at Alberta Distance Learning Centre will no longer be offered as of September 2011. However, course development is underway for the new online Design Studies 1010 course, with an anticipated release date of September 2011. Development will continue for other new online Design Studies courses, to replace existing print courses, as well introduce new Design Studies course offerings. These will become available throughout the 2011/12 school year.

“Design is that area of human experience, skill and knowledge which is concerned with man’s ability to mould his environment to suit his material and spiritual needs.” – B. Archer

Design is evident, often rather simply, in every facet of society. Sometimes design is a complex feature. In any context, design brings a sense of order to the world. Design entails discovering solutions that correspond to the user, task, and context of use. Well-designed objects correspond to their context so well that they are easy to use and beneficial to the user. Design is:
  • A discipline that explores the dialogue between products, people, and contexts.
  • A process that defines a solution to help people achieve their goals.
  • An artifact produced as the result of a created solution.

The Design Studies courses at Alberta Distance Learning Centre (ADLC) are part of the Media, Design & Communication Arts (MDC) cluster of the new Career & Technology Studies (CTS) Program. These courses aim to assist students to become aware of design in their environments and to engage them in the design process to create designs for diverse contexts, utilizing a variety of media tools.
